Why Miniature Highlands Are A Right Fit For You
The joy of raising micro and miniature Highland cattle in today’s farming operations is minimal compared to full-sized cattle. Micro-miniature cows are all less than 36 inches in height at the hip and a miniature cow is 42 inches in height at the hip. Their smaller size makes them easier to handle, move, and manage, especially for individuals with limited space.
Due to their miniature status, these cattle tend to do less damage to land and fencing since they weigh less and have smaller hooves. They also, tend to consume much less than traditional breeds. They are also efficient grazers, thriving on grass and requiring less supplemental feed. These little loves require small acreage, anywhere between 1/2 to 1 acre of pasture of land per animal for optimal grazing, and ample quality hay to sustain through heavy winter months. Miniature Highlands are a hardy breed that can withstand harsh cold temperatures in winter and are adaptable to the hot temperatures in the summer. During Summer season they require adequate shade and water to keep cool and refreshed. In addition to grazing land, miniature cattle need space for a shelter or barn for protection from natural elements. As these are herd animals, we recommend for pairs, 1 to 2 acres.
Miniature Highland cows can be excellent companions, providing both practical benefits and both emotional support due to their kind nature. Our emphasis is on temperament and health. Calves are hand-raised, properly weaned or bottle-fed (only when applicable), and halter trained for a gentle disposition. Miniature cattle enjoy being petted, brushed, and loved to the fullest. Socialization from a young age is pertinent. This produces exceptionally friendly mini cattle, a huge draw for pet buyers (many competitors do minimal training). Our focus is on animal well-being to yield healthy, hardy calves. Miniature Highlands are particularly known for their docile and calm nature. The more you handle and work with them, they are loving companions, great for families, therapy, show cattle, or home-raised beef.
